Using the reduced-description particle-in-cell (RPIC) method, we study the coupling of backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) and backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (BSBS) in regimes where the reflectivity involves the nonlinear behavior of particles trapped in the daughter plasma waves. The temporal envelope of a Langmuir wave (LW) obeys a Schroedinger equation where the potential is the periodic electron density fluctuation resulting from an ion-acoustic wave (IAW). Electron plasma-wave production by stimulated Raman scattering: Competition with stimulated Brillouin scattering

We have used temporally and spectrally resolved Thomson scattering in a CO/sub 2/-laser--plasma interaction experiment to identify electron plasma waves driven by stimulated Raman scattering in a low-density preformed plasma. Plasma waves were observed in a Gaussian-shaped plasma whose peak density was in the range (0.01--0.05)n/sub c/, in qualitative agreement with threshold calculations using a convective amplification model. The plasma waves were observed only during the early part of the pump pulse, and disappeared coincidentally with the onset of ion waves driven by stimulated Brillouin scattering.

Modification of Spatial and Temporal Gains of Stimulated Brillouin and Raman Scattering by Polarization Smoothing

Significant reductions of stimulated Brillouin (SBS) and Raman (SRS) scattering are measured by adding polarization smoothing (PS) to a random phase plate smoothed beam. The associated plasma waves, as measured by Thomson scattering, are spatially and temporally modified and reveal that the interplay between SBS and SRS has to be taken into account to understand the effect of the smoothing. Modification of stimulated Brillouin, saturated Raman scattering and strong Langmuir turbulence by nonlocal heat transport

The linear instability analysis of stimulated Brillouin backscatter (SBS) is revisited to study the effect of nonlocal electron heat transport that enhances the density modulation over that caused by the ponderomotive pressure.
