Elemental tellurium adopts a number of different structures under pressure. The relative stabilities of these allotropes and the interconversion between them were examined on the basis of first principles electronic band structure calculations with and without external pressure. The relative stabilities of the allotropes were also analyzed by estimating the overall strength of covalent bonding on the basis of the Te-Te overlap populations determined from tight-binding electronic structure calculations. Theoretical investigation of structural properties of CuCl, CuBr and CuI compounds under hydrostatic pressure

We have applied a recent version of the full potential linear muffin-tin orbitals method (FPLMTO) to study the structural properties of copper halides CuX (X=Cl, Br, I) under high pressure using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange and correlation potential by Perdew et al. Results are given for lattice parameters, bulk modulus and its first derivatives in the wurtzite(B4), zinc-blende (B3), CsCl (B2), rock-salt (B1), and PbO (B10) structures. The results of these calculations are compared with the available theoretical and experimental data.

Investigation of structural changes in chiral magnet Cr{sub 1∕3}NbS{sub 2} under application of pressure

We perform structural analysis experiments on the chiral magnet Cr{sub 1∕3}NbS{sub 2}, in which Cr{sup 3+} ions are inserted between hexagonal NbS{sub 2} layers. The noncentrosymmetrical nature of the inserted Cr{sup 3+} appears as a distorted CrS{sub 6} octahedron. Under the application of hydrostatic pressure, the lattice shrinks significantly along the c-axis rather than the a-axis. However, at a pressure P of approximately 3–4 GPa, a kink in the rate of decrease in the lattice parameters is observed, and the slight movement of a Nb atom along the c-axis brings about a decrease in the distortion of the CrS{sub 6} octahedron.more »« less

Based on density functional theory, structural, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of TiXSb (X = Si, Ge) at pressures of 0, 5, 10, and 15 GPa have been investigated. Structural properties at 0 GPa are in accord with other theoretical and experimental works. In electronic properties at 0 GPa, Ti-d{sup 2} orbitals have main contributions near the Fermi energy in valence band and in conduction band. Study of structure of low-symmetry complexes in n-GaAs through investigation of integrated polarization of photoluminescence under uniaxial pressure

The authors have investigated the effect of uniaxial pressure on polarization of wide photoluminescence (PL) bands related to complexes in GaAs. It is shown that the V{sub Ga}Te{sub As}, V{sub Ga}Sn{sub Ga} and V{sub Ga}Si{sub Ga} complexes responsible for the 1.2 eV PL band and the Cu{sub Ga}Te{sub As}, Cu{sub Ga}S{sub As} and Cu{sub Ga}Se{sub As} complexes responsible for the 1.3 eV PL band have an additional distortion which can be reoriented and aligned by uniaxial pressure in conditions of PL observation at low temperature.
