Knowledge of the ionization and scintillation responses of liquid xenon (LXe) to nuclear recoils is crucial for LXe-based dark matter experiments. Current calibrations carry large uncertainties in the low-energy region below ~3 keV_nr where signals from dark matter particles of <10 GeV/c² masses are expected. The coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) by solar ⁸ neutrinos also results in a continuum of nuclear recoil events below 3.0 keV_nr (99% of events), which further complicates low-mass dark matter searches in LXe experiments. Detection of neutron-induced nuclear recoils in a low-pressure gaseous detector for particle dark matter searches

Recent neutron beam tests of a prototype detector to search for weakly interacting massive particles in the Galactic Halo are presented. The detector is an optically imaged time-projection chamber using various low-pressure gas mixtures. This technique potentially offers significant advantages for the detection of galactic dark matter in that it measures both the energy and direction of the nuclear recoil. Measurement of the ionization produced by sub-keV silicon nuclear recoils in a CCD dark matter detector

We report a measurement of the ionization efficiency of silicon nuclei recoiling with sub-keV kinetic energy in the bulk silicon of a charge-coupled device (CCD). Nuclear recoils are produced by low-energy neutrons (<24 keV) from a ¹²⁴Sb–⁹Be photoneutron source, and their ionization signal is measured down to 60 eV electron equivalent. This energy range, previously unexplored, is relevant for the detection of low-mass dark matter particles. The measured efficiency is found to deviate from the extrapolation to low energies of the Lindhard model. Dual-phase xenon detectors lead the search for keV-scale nuclear recoil signals expected from the scattering of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter, and can potentially be used to study the coherent nuclear scattering of MeV-scale neutrinos.
