Zero-field unpolarized neutron powder diffraction has been used to study the low-T magnetic structure and {ital T}-dependent crystal structure of M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 2} (M=Co,Ni). Both compounds show collinear ferromagnetism with spin orientation along the {ital c} axis. The results provide the determination of a complete magnetic structure in the ordered state for a molecule-based magnet. Pressure–Temperature Phase Diagram Reveals Spin–Lattice Interactions in Co[N(CN) ₂ ] ₂

Diamond anvil cell techniques, synchrotron-based infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and lattice dynamics calculations are combined with prior magnetic property work to reveal the pressure–temperature phase diagram of Co[N(CN)2]2. The second-order structural boundaries converge on key areas of activity involving the spin state exposing how the pressure-induced local lattice distortions trigger the ferromagnetic → antiferromagnetic transition in this quantum material.

Co{sub 2}{l_brace}[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}bpym{r_brace}{center_dot}H{sub 2}O (1) and M{l_brace}[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 2}bpym{r_brace}{center_dot}H{sub 2}O [M = Mn (2a), Fe (2b), Co (2c); bpym = 2,2{prime}-bipyrimidine] have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. All of the compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. The unit cell parameters for 1 are a = 16.1684(5) {angstrom}, b = 12.9860(3) {angstrom}, c = 10.4207(3) {angstrom}, and Z = 4. Compound 1 is a 2-D layered structure with water intercalated between sheets. 1-D and 2-D homoleptic dicyanamide structures, [Ph{sub 4}P]{sub 2}{Co{sup II}[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}} and [Ph{sub 4}P]{M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 3}} (M = Mn, Co).

The homoleptic complexes [Ph{sub 4}P]{sub 2}{l_brace}Co[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}{r_brace} and [Ph{sub 4}P]{l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 3}{r_brace} [ M = Co, Mn] have been structurally as well as magnetically characterized. The complexes containing {l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}{r_brace}{sup 2-} form 1-D chains, which are bridged via a common dicyanamide ligand in {l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 3}{r_brace}{sup -} to form a 2-D structure. The five-atom [NCNCN]{sup -} ligands lead to a {sup 4}T{sub 1g} ground state for Co(II) which has an unquenched spin-orbit coupling that is reflected in the magnetic properties. Long-range magnetic ordering was not observed in any of these materials.
