Deep inelastic neutron scattering provides a means of directly and accurately measuring the momentum distribution of protons in water, which is determined primarily by the proton ground-state wave function.We find that in water confined on scales of 20 A, this wave function responds to the details of the confinement, corresponds to a strongly anharmonic local potential, shows evidence in some cases of coherent delocalization in double wells, and involves changes in zero-point kinetic energy of the protons from 40 to +120 meV difference from that of bulk water at room temperature. Quantum Coherence and Temperature Dependence of the Anomalous State of Nanoconfined Water in Carbon Nanotubes

X-ray Compton scattering measurements of the electron momentum distribution in water confined in both single-walled and double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT and DWNT), as a function of temperature and confinement size are presented here together with earlier measurements of the proton momentum distribution in the same systems using neutron Compton scattering. These studies provide a coherent picture of an anomalous state of water that exists because of nanoconfinement. This state cannot be described by the weakly interacting molecule picture. Anomalous Electronic Correlations in the Ground State Momentum Density of Al{sub 97}Li{sub 3}

We report high resolution Compton scattering measurements on an Al{sub 97}Li{sub 3} disordered alloy single crystal for momentum transfer along the [100], [110], and [111] symmetry directions. The results are interpreted via corresponding Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation first-principles computations. By comparing spectra for Al{sub 97}Li{sub 3} and Al, we show that the momentum density in the alloy differs significantly from the predictions of the conventional Fermi-liquid picture and that the ground state of Al is modified anomalously by the addition of Li.

The tetrameric dimer-of-dimers complex [(Mn[sub 2]O[sub 2])[sub 2](tphpn)[sub 2]][sup 4+] possesses structural features and a parallel polarization EPR spectrum which are similar to those observed for the S[sub 1] state of the photosystem II water oxidation catalyst. The authors have probed the ground-state electronic structure of [(Mn[sub 2]O[sub 2])[sub 2](tphpn)[sub 2]][sup 4+] by magnetic susceptibility and isothermal saturation magnetization measurements to understand the origin of the EPR spectrum in terms of the intra- and interdimer magnetic exchange interactions and the ground-state zero-field splitting.
