We report on an experiment in which a negative hydrogen ions beam in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linear accelerator was replaced with a beam of protons with similar size and dynamics. Beam loss in the superconducting part of the SNS accelerator was at least an order of magnitude lower for the proton beam. Also beam loss has a stronger dependence on intensity with H- than with proton beams. These measurements verify a recent theoretical explanation of unexpected beam losses in the SNS superconducting linear accelerator based on an intra beam stripping mechanism for negative hydrogen ions. First Simultaneous Acceleration of Multiple Charge States of Heavy Ion Beams in a Large-Scale Superconducting Linear Accelerator

Experimental studies of the simultaneous acceleration of three-charge-state ¹²⁹Xe^49+,50+,51+ beam from 17 to 180 MeV/nucleon in a superconducting linear accelerator are presented. The beam parameters for each individual- and multiple-charge-state beam were measured and compared with the particle tracking simulations. Detailed measurements were performed to characterize the multiple-charge-state beam’s recombination after a second-order achromat and isopath 180° bending system. As a result of the recombination of three charge states in the six-dimensional phase space, the xenon beam intensity was increased by 2.5-fold compared to the single-charge-state beam. Loss in negative hydrogen-ion beams in MeV linear accelerators

A rate of induced radioactivity near the accelerator of about 2.8 mrad/h can be adopted as a measure of the permissible loss for a clean accelerator. The vacuum required to achieve the loss per unit length of accelerated H$sup -$ ions corresponding to this rate of induced radioactivity is evaluated in the beam channel of a linear accelerator. The loss of H$sup -$ ions due to dissociation in the magnetic fields of the doublets is also considered; it is much smaller fraction of the total loss.

The authors have designed a linear accelerator to accelerate negative hydrogen ions to 50 MeV with an instantaneous output current of 100 mA and a normalized rms emittance in both transverse planes of 0.02..pi.. cm X mrad. The design and results obtained to date with a 2-MeV prototype are presented.
