The magnetic and transition magnetic moments of the ground-state baryons are computed in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-N{sub c} limit, where N{sub c} is the number of colors. SU(3) symmetry breaking is systematically studied twofold: On the one hand, one-loop nonanalytic corrections of orders m{sub q}{sup 1/2} and m{sub q} ln m{sub q} are included, with contributions of baryon intermediate states from both flavor octet and flavor decuplet multiplets, assuming degeneracy between baryon states within a given flavor multiplet but nondegeneracy between baryons of different multiplets. The breaking of flavor SU(3) symmetry in the axial vector couplings and magnetic moments of baryons is analyzed in the 1/{ital N}{sub {ital c}} expansion. A simple meson loop graph which is known to be of order {radical}{ital m}{sub {ital s}} and leading order in 1/{ital N}{sub {ital c}} correctly predicts the pattern of symmetry breaking in the magnetic moments. It is, however, not possible to use this graph to predict the magnitude of the breaking. The situation with the axial vector couplings is less clear. Baryon magnetic moments in alternate 1/N{sub c} expansions

Recent work shows not only the necessity of a 1/N{sub c} expansion to explain the observed mass spectrum of the lightest baryons, but also that at least two distinct large N{sub c} expansions, in which quarks transform under either the color-fundamental or the two-index antisymmetric representation of SU(N{sub c}), work comparably well. Here we show that the baryon magnetic moments do not support this ambivalence; they strongly prefer the color-fundamental 1/N{sub c} expansion, providing experimental evidence that nature decisively distinguishes among 1/N{sub c} expansions for this observable.

We consider the baryon octet and decuplet magnetic moments in a simultaneous expansion in [ital m][sub [ital s]] and 1/[ital N] taking [ital N][sub [ital F]]/[ital N][similar to]1, where [ital N] is the number of QCD colors and [ital N][sub [ital F]] is the number of light quark flavors. At leading order in this expansion, the magnetic moments obey the nonrelativistic quark-model relations. We compute corrections to these relations using an effective Lagrangian formalism which respects chiral symmetry to all orders in the 1/[ital N] expansion.
