Atomic ionization by intense laser pulses of short duration: Photoelectron energy and angular distributions

We introduce an adequate integral representation of the wave function in the asymptotic region, valid for the stage postinteraction between a one-electron atom and a laser pulse of short duration, as a superposition of divergent radial spherical waves. Starting with this representation, we derive analytic expressions for the energy and angular distributions of the photoelectrons and we show their connection with expressions used before in the literature. Using our results, we propose a method to extract the photoelectron distributions from the time dependence of the wave function at large distances. The interaction between an atom and a short laser pulse is studied in the case where both photon energies are smaller than the ionization potential and perturbation conditions prevail. Under these conditions, a full numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a hydrogen atom initially in its ground state shows that secondary peaks show up in the above-threshold ionization (ATI) spectrum. We introduce here an easy-to-implement approximation that sheds light on these features. Photoelectron Angular Distributions from Above Threshold Ionization of Hydrogen Atoms in Strong Laser Fields

We apply a scattering theory of nonperturbative quantum electrodynamics to study the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) of a hydrogen atom irradiated by linearly polarized laser light. The calculated PADs show main lobes and jetlike structure. Previous experimental studies reveal that in a set of above-threshold-ionization peaks when the absorbed-photon number increases by one, the jet number also increases by one. Our study confirms this experimental observation. Our calculations further predict that in some cases three more jets may appear with just one-more-photon absorption. With consideration of laser-frequency change, one less jet may also appear with one-more-photon absorption. The jetlike structuremore »« less

Energy-dependent photoelectron angular distributions of two-color two-photon above threshold ionization of atomic helium

Energy-dependent photoelectron angular distributions from two-color two-photon above threshold ionizations are investigated to determine the partial-wave characteristics of free-free electronic transitions in helium. Sideband photoelectron energies ranging from 0.18 to 13.0 eV are measured with different wavelengths of the perturbative infrared dressing field as well as different individually selected high-order harmonics. Using the experimentally measured cross-section ratios and anisotropy parameters together with analytical expressions derived from second-order perturbation theory, the partial-wave branching fractions going to the S and D waves in the positive and negative sidebands are determined as a function of photoelectron kinetic energy.
