Probing interactions between core-electron transitions by ultrafast two-dimensional x-ray coherent correlation spectroscopy

Two-dimensional x-ray correlation spectra (2DXCS) obtained by varying two delay periods in a time-resolved coherent all-x-ray four-wave-mixing measurement are simulated for the N 1s and O 1s transitions of aminophenol. The necessary valence and core-excited states are calculated using singly and doubly substituted Kohn-Sham determinants within the equivalent-core approximation. Sum-over-states calculations of the 2DXCS signals of aminophenol isomers illustrate how novel information about electronic states can be extracted from the 2D spectra. Specific signatures of valence and core-excited states are identified in the diagonal and off-diagonal peaks arising from core transitions of the same and different types, respectively.

Two-Dimensional Molecular Charge Density Waves in Single-Layer-Thick Islands of a Dirac Fermion System

Charge density waves have been intensely studied in inorganic materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides however its counterpart in organic materials has yet to be explored in detail. Here we report the finding of a robust two dimensional charge density waves in molecular layers formed by α-(BEDT-TTF)₂-I₃ on a Ag(111) surface. Interplay between p– and d– orbitals yields multiple Dirac states in one- and two-dimensional CrB₄

Theoretical evidence of the existence of six inequivalent and six threefold degenerate pairs of Dirac cones in the low-spectrum diagram of monolayered hexagonal CrB₄ is provided. The four d electrons of the Cr atom are yielded to the B sublattices creating an isoelectronic structure to graphene where the interplay between p and d orbitals leads to the appearance of additional Dirac states on both one- and two-dimensional geometries. The van der Waals (vdW) interaction plays a prominent role between neutral objects at separations where short ranged chemical forces are negligible. This type of dispersive coupling is determined by the interplay between geometry and response properties of the materials making up the objects.
