We have carried out a systematic study of the crystal electric field excitations in the family of cubic pyrochlores Er₂B₂O₇ with B=Ge, Ti, Pt, and Sn, using neutron spectroscopy. All members of this family are magnetic insulators based on 4f¹¹Er³⁺ and nonmagnetic B⁴⁺. At sufficiently low temperatures, long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed in each of these Er₂B₂O₇ pyrochlores. The different ionic sizes associated with different nonmagnetic B⁴⁺ cations correspond to positive or negative chemical pressure, depending on the relative contraction or expansion of the crystal lattice, which gives rise to different local environments at the Er³⁺ site. Disorder-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in Spin Ice Pyrochlores

We propose that in a certain class of magnetic materials, known as non-Kramers “spin ice,” disorder induces quantum entanglement. Instead of driving glassy behavior, disorder provokes quantum superpositions of spins throughout the system and engenders an associated emergent gauge structure and set of fractional excitations. More precisely, disorder transforms a classical phase governed by a large entropy, classical spin ice, into a quantum spin liquid governed by entanglement. Pyrochlore 'dynamic spin-ice' Pr{sub 2}Sn{sub 2}O{sub 7} and monoclinic Pr{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}: A comparative temperature-dependent Raman study

Here we report a temperature-dependent Raman study of the pyrochlore 'dynamic spin-ice' compound Pr{sub 2}Sn{sub 2}O{sub 7} and compare the results with its non-pyrochlore (monoclinic) counterpart Pr{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}. In addition to phonon modes, we observe two bands associated with electronic Raman scattering involving crystal field transitions in Pr{sub 2}Sn{sub 2}O{sub 7} at {approx}135 and 460 cm{sup -1} which couple strongly to phonons. Anomalous temperature dependence of phonon frequencies that are observed in pyrochlore Pr{sub 2}Sn{sub 2}O{sub 7} are absent in monoclinic Pr{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}. The dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, R₂M₂O₇ (R ¼ Ce; Sm; Nd), are key players in the search for realizable novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) states as a large parameter space within the DO pyrochlore phase diagram is theorized to host QSL states of both dipolar and octupolar nature.
