Strain effects on the spin-orbit-induced band structure splittings in monolayer MoS $_{2}$ and graphene

The strain effects on the spin-orbit-induced splitting of the valence-band maximum and conduction-band minimum in monolayer MoS₂ and the gap in graphene are calculated using first-principles calculations. The dependence of these splittings on the various symmetry types of the strain is described by means of an effective Hamiltonian based on the method of invariants, and the parameters in the model are extracted by fitting to the theory. These splittings are related to acoustic-phonon deformation potentials or electron-phonon-coupling matrix elements which enter the spin-dependent scattering theory of conduction in these materials.

Magnetic Excitations and Electronic Interactions in ${Sr}_{2} {CuTeO}_{6}$ : A Spin- $1 / 2$ Square Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Sr₂CuTeO₆ presents an opportunity for exploring low-dimensional magnetism on a square lattice of S = 1/2 Cu²⁺ ions. In this study, we employ ab initio multireference configuration interaction calculations to unravel the Cu²⁺ electronic structure and to evaluate exchange interactions in Sr₂CuTeO₆. The latter results are validated by inelastic neutron scattering using linear spin-wave theory and series-expansion corrections for quantum effects to extract true coupling parameters. Lastly, using this methodology, which is quite general, we demonstrate that Sr₂CuTeO₆ is an almost ideal realization of a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet but with relatively weak coupling of 7.18(5) meV.
