Charge density wave (CDW) order appears throughout the underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors, but the underlying symmetry breaking and the origin of the CDW remain unclear. We use X-ray diffraction to determine the microscopic structure of the CDWs in an archetypical cuprate YBa₂Cu₃O_6.54 at its superconducting transition temperature ~60 K. We find that the CDWs in this material break the mirror symmetry of the CuO₂ bilayers. The ionic displacements in the CDWs have two components, which are perpendicular and parallel to the CuO₂ planes, and are out of phase with each other. In this study, charge density wave (CDW) correlations have recently been shown to universally exist in cuprate superconductors. However, their nature at high fields inferred from nuclear magnetic resonance is distinct from that measured by x-ray scattering at zero and low fields. Here we combine a pulsed magnet with an x-ray free electron laser to characterize the CDW in YBa₂Cu₃O_6.67 via x-ray scattering in fields up to 28 Tesla. While the zero-field CDW order, which develops below T ~ 150 K, is essentially two-dimensional, at lower temperature and beyond 15 Tesla, another three-dimensionally ordered CDW emerges. SQUID and magnetically modulated microwave absorption observations of the superconducting transition in single crystals of YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub x

Two melt-grown single crystals of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}}, one (crystal A) in the shape of a nearly perfect parallelepiped of dimensions 200{times}200{times}70 {mu}m{sup 3} and with {ital x}{congruent}0, the other (crystal B) with somewhat less oxygen content and of less geometric perfection, with dimensions{congruent}750{times}900{times}10 {mu}m,{sup 3} were measured by both SQUID magnetometry and by magnetically modulated microwave absorption (MAMMA). The two methods respond to the change in magnetic properties at the superconducting transition temperature, but in different ways, giving complementary information.
