The expansion and nonlinear relaxation of a non-neutral electron plasma due to elastic collisions with constant collision frequency {nu}{sub {ital en}} between the plasma electrons and a low-density background neutral gas are investigated theoretically. The model treats the electrons as a strongly magnetized fluid ({omega}{sup 2}{sub {ital pe}}/{omega}{sup 2}{sub {ital ce}}{much_gt}1) with isothermal temperature {ital T}=const immersed in a uniform magnetic field {ital B}{sub 0}{bold e{cflx char}}{sub {ital z}}. Non-adiabatic stability analysis of current and magnetic curvature driven modes in cold plasmas penetrated by neutral gas. Research and training programme on controlled thermonuclear fusion and plasma physics (eur-ne)

Previous stability theories concerning electrostatic current and magnetic curvature driven modes in cold plasma mantle boundary layers are generalized. In particular, the commonly used adiabatic approximation is relaxed. In the general theory presented, important new effects associated with heat conduction, ionization, and ohmic heating are found. In combination with viscosity and resistivity., these effects introduce additional stabilizing as well as destabilizing effects. Furthermore, the present theory typically predicts similar stability properties as the adiabatic theory in the limit /d(lnT)/d(lnn)/ less than 1. Fast Ion Gauge for the Measurement of Neutral Gas Density in the Presence of Magnetically Confined Plasma

A hot filament ion gage with a calculated time constant of 130 mu sec for D₂ at room temperature was developed to measure neutral gas density near a magnetically confined plasma. The plasma contribution to the collector current is determined by operating the device with the filament cold. The influence of emission, gas pressure, and magnetic field on gage sensitivity is given. Measurements taken on a stellarator demonstrate the use of the gage.
