A possibility of formation of static dual scalar and pseudoscalar density wave condensates in dense quark matter is considered for the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in an external magnetic field. Within a mean-field approximation, the effective potential of the theory is obtained and its minima are numerically studied; a phase diagram of the system is constructed. It is shown that the presence of a magnetic field favors the formation of spatially inhomogeneous condensate configurations at low temperatures and arbitrary nonzero values of the chemical potential.

Quark matter under strong magnetic fields in the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

In the present work we use the mean-field approximation to investigate quark matter described by the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model subject to a strong magnetic field. We consider two cases: pure quark matter and quark matter in {beta} equilibrium possibly present in magnetars. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the su(2) version of the model. The energy per baryon of magnetized quark matter becomes more bound than nuclear matter made of iron nuclei, for B around 2x10{sup 19} G. Quark-meson coupling model for antikaon condensation in neutron star matter with strong magnetic fields

We study the effects of strong magnetic fields on antikaon condensation in neutron star matter using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The QMC model describes a nuclear many-body system as nonoverlapping MIT bags in which quarks interact through the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons in the mean-field approximation. It is found that the presence of strong magnetic fields alters the threshold density of antikaon condensation significantly. The onset of K{sup -} condensation stronger depends on the magnetic field strength, and it even shifts beyond the threshold of K{sup 0} condensation for sufficiently strong magnetic fields. In the present work we use the large-N{sub c} approximation to investigate quark matter described by the SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model subject to a strong magnetic field. The Landau levels are filled in such a way that usual kinks appear in the effective mass and other related quantities. {beta} equilibrium is also considered and the macroscopic properties of a magnetar described by this quark matter is obtained. Our study shows that the magnetar masses and radii are larger if the magnetic field increases but only very large fields ({>=}10{sup 18} G) affect the equation of state in a non-negligible way.

Quark matter under strong magnetic fields in chiral models

The chiral model is used to describe quark matter under strong magnetic fields and is compared to other models, the MIT bag model and the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The effect of vacuum corrections due to the magnetic field is discussed. It is shown that if the magnetic-field vacuum corrections are not taken into account explicitly, the parameters of the models should be fitted to low-density meson properties in the presence of the magnetic field.
