We investigate the effect of solitons and vortices, with a range of different topologies, on the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice and a three-dimensional harmonic trap. The solitons and vortices are imposed on the initial state of the atom cloud, which is set in oscillatory motion by a sudden displacement of the harmonic trap. We study this motion using both quantum-mechanical calculations, based on the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, and a semiclassical model for transport through the lowest energy band of the optical lattice. The inductance of vortices {ital L}{sub {ital V}}({ital T},{ital B}) in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} films is studied for temperature 8{lt}{ital T}{lt}85 K, and magnetic field 0{lt}{ital B}{lt}6 T with the goal of identifying the morphology of the vortex pinning sites and the type of the glass phase below the vortex lattice melting transition {ital B}{sub {ital g}}({ital T}). Structures of single vortex and vortex lattice in a {ital d}-wave superconductor

The structures of a single vortex and vortex lattice in a superconductor with {ital d}{sub {ital x}{sup 2}{minus}{ital y}{sup 2}} symmetry are studied self-consistently employing a recently developed Ginzburg-Landau theory. Near a single vortex, we found that an {ital s}-wave component of the order parameter is always induced, and it causes the local magnetic-field distribution and the {ital d}-wave order parameter to have a fourfold anisotropy. It is shown that there is a strong correlation between the structure of a single vortex and the shape of the vortex lattice. Vortex-lattice--vortex-liquid states in anisotropic high- T sub c superconductors

We investigate vortex-lattice structures in highly anisotropic superconductors for a situation where the vortices are slightly inclined with respect to the easy plane of the crystal. The equilibrium configuration is found to be a vortex lattice with a rhombic unit cell highly compressed along the direction perpendicular to the easy plane. The elastic modulus for a shear deformation along this direction is exponentially small, which should result in melting of the vortex lattice, already at quite low temperatures. We have carried out a Monte Carlo study of anisotropic 3D uniformly frustrated {ital XY} models, as a model for the type-II high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} superconductors. Vortex-line-lattice melting, vortex-line cutting, and entanglement have been studied in relation to the superconducting phase transition.
