Dependence of the localized surface plasmon resonance of noble metal quasispherical nanoparticles on their crystallinity-related morphologies

The absorption spectra of 5 nm noble metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au, and Cu) with typical morphologies of multiply twinned particles (MTPs) and single crystals are calculated by using the discrete dipole approximation method. Among the considered morphologies, it is found that icosahedral, cuboctahedral and truncated octahedral particles behave like quasispherical particles whereas the optical response of the decahedral particles significantly differs from the others. This result, which originates from the shape anisotropy of the decahedron, points out the capacity to discriminate decahedral MTPs from a population of particles with mixed crystallinities and related quasispherical shapes.

Switching of localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles on a GeSbTe film mediated by nanoscale phase change and modification of surface morphology

As a platform for active nanophotonics, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) switching via interaction with a chalcogenide phase change material (GeSbTe) was investigated. We performed single-particle spectroscopy of gold nanoparticles placed on a GeSbTe thin film. By irradiation with a femtosecond pulsed laser for amorphization and a continuous wave laser for crystallization, significant switching behavior of the LSPR band due to the interaction of GeSbTe was observed. The switching mechanism was explained in terms of both a change in the refractive index and a modification of surface morphology accompanying volume expansion and reduction of GeSbTe.

Ultrafast Control of a Surface Plasmon Resonance via the Insulator to Metal Transition in V02 Nanoparticles

We report on the study of the ultrafast insulator-to-metal transition in nanoparticles of strongly correlated VO2. The particles are grown by ion-implantation and self-assembly in a Silica matrix and can be switched between the insulating and metallic phase within less than 100 fs. The prompt formation of the metallic state results in the appearance of a surface-plasmon resonance that is absent in the bulk and can be further tailored by controlling the particle shape.
Photoinduced phase transition in VO2 nanocrystals: ultrafast control of surface-plasmon resonance

We study the ultrafast insulator-to-metal transition in nanoparticles of VO2 , obtained by ion implantation and self-assembly in silica. The nonmagnetic, strongly correlated compound VO2 undergoes a reversible phase transition, which can be photoinduced on an ultrafast time scale. In the nanoparticles, prompt formation of the metallic state results in the appearance of surface-plasmon resonance. We achieve large, ultrafast enhancement of optical absorption in the near-infrared spectral region that encompasses the wavelength range for optical-fiber communications. One can further tailor the response of the nanoparticles by controlling their shape.

Self-organization of a periodic structure between amorphous and crystalline phases in a GeTe thin film induced by femtosecond laser pulse amorphization

A self-organized fringe pattern in a single amorphous mark of a GeTe thin film was formed by multiple femtosecond pulse amorphization. Micro Raman measurement indicates that the fringe is a periodic alternation between crystalline and amorphous phases. The period of the fringe is smaller than the irradiation wavelength and the direction is parallel to the polarization direction. Snapshot observation revealed that the fringe pattern manifests itself via a complex but coherent process, which is attributed to crystallization properties unique to a nonthermally amorphized phase and the distinct optical contrast between crystalline and amorphous phases.
