Polarized-neutron diffraction (PND) experiments have revealed that the pseudogap state of the cuprates exhibits unusual intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetism. At a qualitative level, the data indicate a moment direction that is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the CuO₂ layers, yet an accurate measurement at a high-symmetry momentum point in a structurally simple compound has been lacking. Such a measurement would be crucial, as it would help to narrow down the scenarios for the microscopic origin of the IUC magnetism. Since the discovery of high-transition-temperature (T{sub c}) superconductivity in La{sub 2-x}Ba{sub x}CuO{sub 4} in 1986, the study of the lamellar copper oxides has remained at the forefront of condensed matter physics. Apart from their unusually high values of T{sub c}, these materials also exhibit a variety of complex phenomena and phases. This rich behavior is a consequence of the lamellar crystal structures, formed of copper-oxygen sheets separated by charge reservoir layers, and of the strong electron-electron correlations in the copper-oxygen sheets. First-principles calculation of the transition temperature {ital T}{sub {ital c}} for HgBa{sub 2}CuO{sub 4+{delta}} high-temperature superconductors via dipolon theory

First numerical evaluations of {ital T}{sub {ital c}} for oxygenated and argon-reduced single-layered HgBa{sub 2}CuO{sub 4+{delta}} superconductors have been presented. Our calculations are based on the dipolon theory and are found to provide an explanation for the occurrence of superconductivity in single-layered high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} superconductors. Relevant expressions useful for the evaluation of {ital T}{sub {ital c}} have been given. Since the polarizabilities of the ions are not known exactly for the present systems we have performed calculations making use of Pauling`s as well as Tessman, Kahn, and Shockley`s polarizabilities in order to estimate the uncertainties in the calculatedmore »« less
