Symmetry lowering of lattice defects due to anharmonic interatomic forces

From fifth international corference on internal friction and ultrasonic attenuation in crystalline solids; Aachen, Germany (27 Aug Interstitials produced by fast-particle irradiation of metals have previously shown to produce a significant reduction of the elastic moduli. An atomic model is proposed that explains the observed effect of the interstitials. It is shown that anharmonic interatomic forces may lead to a lowering of the symmetry of the atomic configuration around the interstitials. The deformability of the interstitials is also taken into account. (GE)

The temperature dependence of the Moessbauer effect has been measured at /sup 119/Sn nuclei in Pd/sub 0.99/Sn/sub 0.01/. The thermal shift and recoil-free fraction have been interpreted using the neutron-determined phonon density of states and Mannheim's impurity model. The forces between the Sn atom and the Pd host are found to be increased relative to the Pd-Pd coupling.

Facile solvent-free synthesis of pure-phased AlN nanowhiskers at a low temperature

Pure hexagonal aluminum nitride (AlN) nanowhiskers have been successfully synthesized by directly reacting AlCl{sub 3} with NaN{sub 3} in non-solvent system at the low temperature of 450 deg. C for 24 h. The obtained products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction, which show that the obtained products are hexagonal phase AlN nanowhiskers with width from 10 to 80 nm and length up to several micrometers. Localized two-vibron bound-state dynamics in a molecular lattice with a defect: Resonances between bound, localized, and free states

The two-vibron dynamics in a molecular nanowire with a local defect is characterized. The integration of the time dependent Schrodinger equation has revealed the occurrence of two singular behaviors. When the defect frequency shift is close to the intramolecular anharmonicity, a resonance between the localized two-vibron bound state and the two-vibron free states continuum takes place. The resonance breaks the localized vibron pair and two independent vibrons are emitted on each side of the defect so that an exponential decay of the defect vibrational population occurs. Lattice engineered compliant substrate for defect-free heteroepitaxial growth

Presented here is proof-of-principle that a thin single crystal semiconductor film{emdash}when twist-wafer bonded to a bulk single crystal substrate (of the same material){emdash}will comply to the lattice constant of a different single crystal semiconductor thick film grown on its surface. In our experiment, a 100 {Angstrom} film of GaAs was wafer bonded to a GaAs bulk substrate, with a large twist angle between their {l_angle}110{r_angle} directions. The resultant twist boundary ensures high flexibility in the thin film.
