We study a model of correlated electrons coupled by tunneling to a layer of itinerant metallic electrons, which allows us to interpolate from a frustrated limit favorable to spin liquid states to a Kondo-lattice limit favorable to interlayer coherent heavy metallic states. We study the competition of the spinon Fermi-surface state and the interlayer coherent heavy Kondo metal that appears with increasing tunneling. Crossover from Fermi liquid to Luttinger-liquid-like behavior in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

The crossover from conventional Fermi-liquid (FL) behavior to the Luttinger-liquid-like behavior in the two-dimensional single-band small-[ital U] Hubbard model near half filling is demonstrated. The applicability of the FL picture is discussed. This crossover is reproduced in the fermionic channel of the [ital t]-[ital J] model, if the fermion-fermion interaction is taken into account. The results are in qualitative agreement with the normal-state resistivity and photoemission data on the high-[ital T][sub [ital c]] cuprates.

Superconductivity in Striped and Multi-Fermi-Surface Hubbard Models: From the Cuprates to the Pnictides

Single- and multiband Hubbard models have been found to describe many of the complex phenomena that are observed in the cuprate and iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Simulations of these models therefore provide an ideal framework to study and understand the superconducting properties of these systems and the mechanisms responsible for them. Here, we review recent dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations of these models, which provide an unbiased view of the leading correlations in the system. In particular, we discuss what these simulations tell us about superconductivity in the homogeneous 2D single-orbital Hubbard model, and how charge stripes affect this behavior.more »« less
