Inner-shell photoionization and core-hole decay of Xe and XeF{sub 2}

Photoionization cross sections and partial ion yields of Xe and XeF{sub 2} from Xe 3d{sub 5/2}, Xe 3d{sub 3/2}, and F 1s subshells in the 660–740 eV range are compared to explore effects of the F ligands. The Xe 3d-ϵf continuum shape resonances dominate the photoionization cross sections of both the atom and molecule, but prominent resonances appear in the XeF{sub 2} cross section due to nominal excitation of Xe 3d and F 1s electrons to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), a delocalized anti-bonding MO. Observing pre-edge $K$ -shell resonances in Kr, Xe, and ${XeF}_{2}$

The 1s→np Rydberg transitions below the 1s ionization thresholds of Kr and Xe are obscured in x-ray absorption spectra due to core-hole lifetime broadening. However, the np spectator electrons associated with those resonances can affect the core-hole decay spectra. We report on ion charge-state distributions of Kr and Xe measured in coincidence with KL_2,3 (K_α1,2), KM_2,3 (Kβ_1,3), and KN_2,3 (Kβ₂) x-ray fluorescence as the incident x-ray energy is scanned through pre-edge resonances and ionization thresholds. Appearance of interatomic Coulombic decay in Ar, Kr, and Xe homonuclear dimers

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) is observed in the rare gas homonuclear dimers Ar{sub 2}, Kr{sub 2}, and Xe{sub 2} with photoion spectroscopy techniques. Inner valence ionization of the outer ns shell of these systems is known to create a metastable state that dissociates to form a ground state ion and a neutral excited fragment. Inner valence ionization to form ns satellite states leads to similar dissociations, but the neutral fragment gets all the more excited as the internal energy of the ns satellite state increases. Role of XeF as an intermediate in the photochemical synthesis of XeF/sub 2/ in flash-photolyzed Xe/Ar/F/sub 2/ mixtures

The fluorine in Xe/F/sub 2/ and Xe/Ar/F/sub 2/ mixtures was photodissociated, and the resulting transient species were monitored by photographic and photoelectric UV kinetic absorption spectroscopy and by laser fluorescence. The number density equilibrium constant for the reversible reaction Xe + F ..-->.. XeF (k/sub 7/,k/sub -7/) was calculated from statistical thermodynamics to be K/sub eq/ = 2.22 x 10/sup -21/ cm/sup 3/ at 298 K, and values of k/sub 7/ and k/sub -7/ show that equilibrium between F and XeF was rapidly established.
