In the island of inversion, ground states of neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei exhibit strong admixtures of intruder configurations from the fp shell. The nucleus ³⁰Mg, located at the boundary of the island of inversion, serves as a cornerstone to track the structural evolution as one approaches this region. Spin-parity assignments for excited states in ³⁰Mg, especially negative-parity levels, have yet to be established. X-ray investigations performed on the rotator phases of n alkanes C/sub n/H/sub 2n/+1 with 26< or =n< or =34 prove that their structures are different from those exhibited by lower-numbered compounds. Two kinds of phases with monoclinic and triclinic symmetries are encountered both with the molecules tilted with respect to the layer plane. The interlayer stacking modes are compared to those found in thermotropic liquid crystals.

Adsorption of Zn{sup 2+} at the rutile TiO{sub 2} (110)-aqueous interface was studied with Bragg-reflection X-ray standing waves (XSW), polarization-dependent surface extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the interrelated issues of adsorption site, its occupancy, ion-oxygen coordination and hydrolysis. At pH 8, Zn{sup 2+} was found to adsorb as an inner-sphere complex at two different sites, i.e., monodentate above the bridging O site and bidentate between two neighboring terminal O sites.
