Finite-size scaling analysis of the decay of an unstable state during a first order phase transition

The authors extend standard finite-size scaling methods to study the dynamical evolution of an unstable state far from equilibrium as the system undergoes a first order phase transition. They suggest that the nonequilibrium structure factor S(q,t,L), at late times and for large enough lattice sizes, scales as S(q,t,L) = L/sup d/F(qL, t/sup 1/chi//L). Nonequilibrium second-order phase transitions in stochastic lattice systems: a finite-size scaling analysis in two dimensions

Two-dimensional lattice-gas models with attractive interactions and particle-conserving hopping dynamics under the influence of a very large external electric field along a principal axis are studied in the case of a critical density. A finite-size scaling analysis allows the evaluation of critical indexes for the infinite system as ..beta.. = 0.230 +/- 0.003, v = 0.55 +/- 0.2, and ..cap alpha.. approx. = 0. They also describe some qualitative features of the system evolution and the existence of certain anisotropic order even well above the critical temperature in the case of finite lattices.

Fractal surface dimensionality and finite-size scaling at the superfluid transition of confined /sup 4/He

A connection between surface fractal dimensionality and the critical behavior of confined /sup 4/He at the superfluid transition is suggested. It is shown that in the specific case of Nuclepore filters the disagreement with bulk-correlation-length scaling can be resolved if one ascribes a fractal dimension to the confining surface of about 2.34. Explicit scaling functions for both the specific heat and the superfluid density are suggested. Measurements of adsorption isotherms for 0.2-..mu..m filters support this fractal conjecture and yield a surface dimensionality of 2.24 +- 0.02.

Finite-size scaling and the convective conductance and specific heat of planar helium films near the superfluid transition

We have measured the convective conductance of saturated helium films at the superfluid transition. Our data show that the Kosterlitz-Thouless features of the transition established for thinner films are retained for all the films we have measured up to 156 A. The finite-size scaling hypothesis is examined, and it is found that the shift in transition temperature is governed by an exponent less than that of the three-dimensional correlation length.
