Energy gaps and elementary excitations for certain VBS-quantum antiferromagnets

It is shown for a class of antiferromagnetic Hamiltonians how one can get lower bounds for the energy gap above the ground state by diagonalizing a finite system. This method is applied to certain spin chains (including a spin-1 chain). Trial wave functions are proposed for the elementary excitations and are tested in the case of the spin-1 chain.

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the ideal S=1/2 1-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet (AF), contains no single-mode contributions, and, in fact, can be described as a 2-particle continuum of spinons. Chain-MF theory predicts that a weakly coupled chains system becomes ordered at low temperatures. In the ordered state a sharp magnon excitation is present. The continuum persists, but is separated from the magnon branch by an appreciable energy gap. Haldane-gap excitations in the low-H{sub c} one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C{sub 5}D{sub 14}N{sub 2}){sub 2}N{sub 3}(PF{sub 6})

Inelastic neutron scattering on deuterated single-crystal samples is used to study Haldane-gap excitations in the new S=1 one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C{sub 5}D{sub 14}N{sub 2}){sub 2}N{sub 3}(PF{sub 6}), that was recently recognized as an ideal model system for high-field studies. The Haldane gap energies {Delta}{sub x}=0.42(3) meV, {Delta}{sub y}=0.52(6) meV, and {Delta}{sub z}=1.9(1) meV, for excitations polarized along the a, b, and c crystallographic axes, respectively, are measured. The dispersion relation is studied for momentum transfers both along and perpendicular to the chains' direction. When magnons and phonons, the fundamental quasiparticles of the solid, are coupled to one another, they form a new hybrid quasi-particle, leading to novel phenomena and interesting applications.
