Neutron inelastic scattering and diffraction techniques have been used to study the MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4} spinel system. Our measurements show the existence of two transitions to long-range ordered ferrimagnetic states, the first collinear and the second noncollinear. The lower temperature transition, characterized by development of antiferromagnetic components in the basal plane, is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion and the appearance of a gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. The low-temperature noncollinear magnetic structure has been definitively resolved. Taken together, the crystal and magnetic structures indicate a staggered ordering of the V d orbitals. Spin ordering and orbital ordering transitions in MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}

We present low-temperature x-ray diffraction, susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal conductivity results both on single crystal and polycrystalline MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}. The single crystal sample exhibits two transitions: a spin ordering (ferrimagnetic) transition at T{sub SO}=56 K and an orbital ordering transition at T{sub OO}=52 K. The structural change and phase separation at T{sub OO} suggest that the transition is first order. With applied magnetic fields, both T{sub SO} and T{sub OO} increase and T{sub OO} disappears with H{>=}0.5 T. The polycrystalline sample just exhibits one transition at 55 K. Orbital Ordering and Magnetic Field Effect in MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}

We studied the structural properties of an orbital-spin-coupled spinel oxide, MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}, mainly by single-crystal x-ray diffraction measurement. It was found that a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal and ferrimagnetic ordering occur at the same temperature (T{sub s},T{sub N}=57 K). The structural phase transition was induced also by magnetic field above T{sub s}. In addition, magnetic-field-induced alignment of tetragonal domains results in large magnetostriction below T{sub s}. We also found that the structural phase transition is caused by the antiferro-type ordering of the V t{sub 2g} orbitals.

We studied the magnetic and structural properties of spinel MnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}, which has S=5/2 spin with no orbital degrees of freedom on the Mn{sup 2+} site and S=1 spin and three orbital degrees of freedom on the V{sup 3+} site. We found that the ferrimagnetic ordering at T{sub N}=56.5 K and the structural phase transition at T{sub s}=53.5 K are closely correlated in this compound and found a switching of crystal structure between cubic and tetragonal phases by the magnetic field. This phenomenon can be explained by the coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in the t{submore » 2g} states of the V site.« less

Identification of ferrimagnetic orbitals preventing spinel degradation by charge ordering in Li_xMn₂O₄

Spinel Li_x Mn₂ O₄ is a key cathode material that is used extensively in commercial Li-ion batteries. A challenge with this material has been that the capacity of the battery fades with cycling, an effect that can be traced to the presence of an antiferromagnetic insulator phase in the fully lithiated LiMn₂O₄ (LMO) and the associated charge disproportionation that drives distortions of the MnO₆ octahedra.
