Magnetic phase transition in the S=(1)/(2) zigzag-chain compound SrCuO{sub 2}

We have studied the magnetic properties of the S=(1)/(2) quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet SrCuO{sub 2}, which has zigzag chains of Cu{sup 2+} ions. We have observed a static magnetic ordering below T{sub c}{approximately}2 K. The weak internal field in the muon spin relaxation spectra and the absence of the magnetic Bragg peaks below T{sub c} suggest that the Cu{sup 2+} moments are largely reduced probably due to the quantum fluctuation. The remarkable suppression of the ordering temperature (kT{sub c}/J{sub 2}=1.1{times}10{sup {minus}3}), where J{sub 2} is the dominant exchange constant, probably originates from the combined effects of quantum fluctuation and frustration. {copyright}more »« less

Quantum dot to quantum wire transition of m-plane GaN islands

Structural studies of m-plane GaN quantum dots and quantum wires are presented. A shape transition responsible for the evolution of quantum dots into quantum wires is put in evidence and shown to depend on the amount of material deposited. In addition, it is established that vertical correlation of successive nanostructure planes may also induce the dot-wire shape transition. Consistent with theoretical predictions, it is proposed that the shape transition results from an elastic energy minimization process made possible by an easy adatom diffusion along [11-20] direction.

Quantum-confinement-induced {Gamma}{r_arrow}{ital X} transition in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum films, wires, and dots

Large GaAs domains embedded in an Al{sub {ital x}}Ga{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}As matrix act as potential wells for both electrons and holes, resulting in a direct band-gap system. When the GaAs domains become small, however, quantum-confinement effects may push the {Gamma}-like conduction-band state localized on GaAs above the {ital X}-like conduction-band state of the Al{sub {ital x}}Ga{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}As alloy, leading to an indirect band-gap system. Using a pseudopotential band-structure method, as well as the conventional one-band effective-mass approximation, we investigate the nature of the direct{r_arrow}indirect ({Gamma}{r_arrow}{ital X}) transition in GaAs/Al{sub {ital x}}Ga{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}As quantum films, wires, and dots.
