Linear dichroism and the nature of charge order in underdoped cuprates

Recent experiments have addressed the nature of the charge order seen in underdoped cuprates. In this paper, I show that x-ray absorption and linear dichroism are excellent probes of such order. Ab initio calculations reveal that a d-wave charge density wave order involving the oxygen ions is a much better description of the data than alternate models.

High-pressure neutron powder diffraction, muon-spin rotation, and magnetization studies of the structural, magnetic, and the superconducting properties of the Ce-underdoped superconducting (SC) electron-doped cuprate system with the Nd₂ CuO₄ (the so-called T ' ) structure T ' - Pr_{1.3 - x} La_0.7 Ce_x CuO₄ with x = 0.1 are reported. A strong reduction of the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice constants is observed under pressure. X-ray-absorption sum rule for linear dichroism: Application to high-[ital T][sub [ital c]] cuprate oxides

Several sum rules for x-ray-absorption (XAS) dichroism have been recently derived. Here we discuss the particular case of linear polarization, relevant to cuprate oxides. We apply this analysis to the [ital L][sub 2] and [ital L][sub 3] edges of La[sub 2[minus][ital x]]Sr[sub [ital x]]CuO[sub 4] in order to obtain quantitative, model-independent information about the out-of-plane character of 3[ital d] holes. A Cu 3[ital d][sub 3[ital z]][sup 2][minus][ital r][sup 2] to 3[ital d][sub [ital x]][sup 2][minus][ital y][sup 2] ratio of 3% is found for an insulating and two superconducting samples, and of 7% for the overdoped one.
