Disorder-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid in Spin Ice Pyrochlores

We propose that in a certain class of magnetic materials, known as non-Kramers “spin ice,” disorder induces quantum entanglement. Instead of driving glassy behavior, disorder provokes quantum superpositions of spins throughout the system and engenders an associated emergent gauge structure and set of fractional excitations. More precisely, disorder transforms a classical phase governed by a large entropy, classical spin ice, into a quantum spin liquid governed by entanglement. Disordered Route to the Coulomb Quantum Spin Liquid: Random Transverse Fields on Spin Ice in $\Pr_{2} {Zr}_{2} O_{7}$

Inelastic neutron scattering reveals a broad continuum of excitations in Pr ₂ Zr ₂ O ₇ , the temperature and magnetic field dependence of which indicate a continuous distribution of quenched transverse fields ( Δ ) acting on the non-Kramers Pr ^{3 +} crystal field ground state doublets. Spin-ice correlations are apparent within 0.2 meV of the Zeeman energy. Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) have been at the forefront of correlated electron research ever since their proposal in 1973, and the realization that they belong to the broader class of intrinsic topological orders. According to received wisdom, QSLs can arise in frustrated magnets with low spin S, where strong quantum fluctuations act to destabilize conventional, magnetically ordered states.
