Capacitance of a nanoscale system is usually thought of having two contributions, a classical electrostatic contribution and a quantum contribution dependent on the density of states and/or molecular orbitals close to the Fermi energy. In this letter we demonstrate that in molecular nano-magnets and other magnetic nanoscale systems, the quantum part of the capacitance becomes spin-dependent, and is tunable by an external magnetic field. This molecular magnetocapacitance can be realized using single molecule nano-magnets and/or other nano-structures that have antiferromagnetic ground states. Magnetocapacitance effect and related microstrucuture in Ti-doped YMnO{sub 3}

We have investigated microstructures giving rise to magnetocapacitance effect in Ti-doped YMnO{sub 3} (YMn{sub 1-x}Ti{sub x}O{sub 3}) by both electron diffraction and real-space imaging techniques. Diffuse scattering elongating along the [110] direction due to the instability of the Mn trimerization were found in the x=0.175 compound, which exhibits the enhanced magnetocapacitance effect. With increasing Ti concentration, the centrosymmetric (paraelectric) R3c phase grows up at the expense of the ferroelectric P6{sub 3}cm phase around x=0.20 and the R3c phase is dominant above x=0.30. Room-temperature multiferroic and magnetocapacitance effects in M-type hexaferrite BaFe{sub 10.2}Sc{sub 1.8}O{sub 19}

The room-temperature multiferroic and magnetocapacitance (MC) effects of polycrystalline M-type hexaferrite BaFe{sub 10.2}Sc{sub 1.8}O{sub 19} have been investigated. The results show that the magnetic moments of insulating BaFe{sub 10.2}Sc{sub 1.8}O{sub 19} can be manipulated by the electric field at room temperature, indicating the existence of magnetoelectric coupling. Moreover, large MC effects are also observed around the room temperature. A frequency dependence analysis shows that the Maxwell-Wagner type magnetoresistance effect is the dominant mechanism for MC effects at low frequencies.
