It was recently pointed out and demonstrated experimentally by Lundeen et al. that the wave function of a particle (more precisely, the wave function possessed by each member of an ensemble of identically-prepared particles) can be “directly measured” using weak measurement. Here it is shown that if this same technique is applied, with appropriate post-selection, to one particle from a perhaps entangled multi-particle system, the result is precisely the so-called “conditional wave function” of Bohmian mechanics. A Robust Protocol for Entropy Measurement in Mesoscopic Circuits

Previous measurements utilizing Maxwell relations to measure change in entropy, S, demonstrated remarkable accuracy in measuring the spin-1/2 entropy of electrons in a weakly coupled quantum dot. However, these previous measurements relied upon prior knowledge of the charge transition lineshape. This had the benefit of making the quantitative determination of entropy independent of scale factors in the measurement itself but at the cost of limiting the applicability of the approach to simple systems. To measure the entropy of more exotic mesoscopic systems, a more flexible analysis technique may be employed; however, doing so requires a precise calibration of the measurement.more »« less

Enhancing robustness of multiparty quantum correlations using weak measurement

Multipartite quantum correlations are important resources for the development of quantum information and computation protocols. However, the resourcefulness of multipartite quantum correlations in practical settings is limited by its fragility under decoherence due to environmental interactions. Though there exist protocols to protect bipartite entanglement under decoherence, the implementation of such protocols for multipartite quantum correlations has not been sufficiently explored. Here, we study the effect of local amplitude damping channel on the generalized Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger state, and use a protocol of optimal reversal quantum weak measurement to protect the multipartite quantum correlations. Measures of location and scale for velocities in clusters of galaxies - A robust approach

The novel estimators proposed for the kinematical properties of clusters of galaxies are both resistant in the presence of outliers and robust for a broad range of non-Gaussian underlying populations. Extensive simulations for a number of common situations realizable in small-to-large samples of cluster radial velocities allow the identification of minimum variance estimators. Also explored is the estimation of confidence intervals, using the jacknife and bootstrap resampling techniques. These methods are compared to simple formulas based on sample estimates of central location and scale. Estimators of confidence intervals on scale require resampling. 61 refs.
