We find a time dependence different from that reported previously in the literature for the species concentration in the {ital A}+{ital B}{r arrow}0 diffusion-limited reaction for dimensions {ital d}{lt}2 when the {ital A}-{ital B} pairs are initially correlated. Whereas an uncorrelated initial distribution leads to the well-known decay law {rho}{similar to}{ital t}{sup {minus}{ital d}/4} for {ital d}{lt}4 and {rho}{similar to}{ital t}{sup {minus}1} for {ital d}{ge}4, a correlated initial distribution leads to the decay law {rho}{similar to}{ital t}{sup {minus}({ital d}+2)/4} for {ital d}{lt}2 and {rho}{similar to}{ital t}{sup {minus}1} for {ital d}{ge}2. Reaction cross sections by time profile measurements under crossed-beam conditions: The Ca( sup 3 P , sup 1 D )+N sub 2 O r arrow CaO*+N sub 2 reaction

The collision energy dependence of the Ca({sup 3}{ital P},{sup 1}{ital D})+N{sub 2}O{r arrow}CaO*+N{sub 2} reaction has been determined by time profile measurements under crossed-beam conditions. A narrow velocity distribution N{sub 2}O beam collides with a pulsed beam of excited metastable Ca({sup 3}{ital P},{sup 1}{ital D}) atoms, produced by low-voltage discharge. Time-of-flight spectra were used to monitor both the reagent translational and the chemiluminescence yield of the CaO* product (green arc band). The chemiluminescence cross section for excitation of the CaO green arc bands decreases with increasing translational energy with {sup 1}{ital D} reagent, but increases for the {sup 3}{ital P}more »« less

Electron-impact excitation cross sections have been calculated using the impact-parameter method for [ital X] [sup 1][Sigma][sub g][sup +][r arrow]B [sup 1][Sigma][sub u][sup +] and [ital X] [sup 1][Sigma][sub g][sup +][r arrow]C [sup 1][Pi][sub u] transitions for both H[sub 2] and D[sub 2] molecules as a function of incident energy and of vibrational quantum number [ital v][sub [ital i]]. The results show that the cross sections initially increase monotonically with increasing [ital v][sub [ital i]] and follow the opposite trend for higher [ital v][sub [ital i]] values.

The principal research accomplishment during the period of the grant was the study of generation of acoustic pulses from electromagnetic pulses. In particular, the authors considered an infinite medium, which the authors took to be a non-conducting liquid (ultimately we chose water for numerical examples) and assumed that a one-dimensional and electromagnetic pulse or train of pulses was created at time t=O by the turning on and off of appropriate currents and found the acoustic pulses which were generated by the electromagnetic pulses.
