Optimizing Component–Component Interaction Energies in the Self-Assembly of Finite, Multicomponent Structures

Components of multicomponent biological self-assembly processes generally have interfaces that are optimized to enable the process to proceed quickly and reliably. Analogous principles for designing such interfaces for engineered multicomponent self-assembly processes, such as those involving nucleic acid components, are still being developed. Inspired by biological systems, here, we use stochastic kinetic computer simulations to understand how to tune the strength of interfaces to achieve maximal yields in an addressable self-assembly process. We report bioinspired membrane molecules with improved physical properties and enhanced stability can serve as functional models for conventional lipid or amphiphilic species. Importantly, these molecules can also provide new insights into emergent phenomena that manifest during self-assembly at interfaces. Here, we elucidate the structural response and mechanistic steps underlying the self-assembly of the amphiphilic, charged oligodimethylsiloxane imidazolium cation (ODMS-MIM+) at the air–aqueous interface using Langmuir trough methods with coincident surface-specific vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. Synergism in Multicomponent Self-Propagating Molecular Assemblies

Multicomponent self-propagating molecular assemblies (SPMAs) have been generated from an organic chromophore, a redox-active polypyridyl complex, and PdCl{sub 2}. The structure of the multicomponent SPMA is not a linear combination of two assemblies generated with a single molecular constituent. Surface-confined assemblies formed from only the organic chromophore and PdCl{sub 2} are known to follow linear growth, whereas the combination of polypyridyl complexes and PdCl{sub 2} results in exponential growth.
