The nanoscale pattern formation of Ge surfaces uniformly irradiated by Kr{sup +} ions was studied in a low-contamination environment at ion energies of 250 and 500 eV and at angles of 0 Degree-Sign through 80 Degree-Sign . The authors present a phase diagram of domains of pattern formation occurring as these two control parameters are varied. The results are insensitive to ion energy over the range covered by the experiments. Flat surfaces are stable from normal incidence up to an incidence angle of {theta} = 55 Degree-Sign from normal. Single crystals of the rare silicate neptunite were irradiated with 600 keV Ar{sup 2+} and 1.5 MeV Kr{sup +}, and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Amorphization was observed in a surface layer only several hundred angstroms thick following Ar{sup 2+} irradiations up to 5.0 {times} 10{sup 13} Ar/cm{sup 2}, yet the Ar{sup 2+} ions traveled an average of 1/2 {mu}m in depth. Dewetting and nanopattern formation of thin Pt films on SiO{sub 2} induced by ion beam irradiation

Dewetting and nanopattern formation of 3{endash}10 nm Pt thin films upon ion irradiation is studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Lateral feature size and the fraction of exposed surface area are extracted from SEM images and analyzed as functions of ion dose. The dewetting phenomenon has little temperature dependence for 3 nm Pt films irradiated by 800 keV Kr{sup +} at temperatures ranging from 80 to 823 K. At 893 K, the films dewet without irradiation, and no pattern formation is observed even after irradiation. Ion-beam irradiation of perovskite structures results in the production and accumulation of defects. Below a critical temperature, irradiation also leads to a crystalline-to-amorphous transformation. The critical temperature for amorphization under 800 keV Kr{sup +} ion irradiation is 425,440 and 550 K for SrTiO{sub 3}, CaTiO{sub 3} and BaTiO{sub 3}, respectively. The nanoscale oxidation mechanisms and kinetics of a model β-NiAl system were investigated using in situ closed-cell gas reaction scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Here, we directly visualize the dynamic structural and chemical changes that occur during high-temperature oxidation at a high spatial resolution of 50.3Ni–49.7Al (at.%) nanoparticles under static air conditions at 730 Torr with heating up to 750 °C at 5 °C/s.
