We introduce shower deconstruction, a method to look for new physics in a hadronic environment. The method aims to be a full information approach using small jets. It assigns to each event a number {chi} that is an estimate of the ratio of the probability for a signal process to produce that event to the probability for a background process to produce that event. The analytic functions we derive to calculate these probabilities mimic what full event generators like Pythia or Herwig do and can be depicted in a diagrammatic way. Quark-gluon tagging with shower deconstruction: Unearthing dark matter and Higgs couplings

The separation of quark and gluon initiated jets can be an important way to improve the sensitivity in searches for new physics or in measurements of Higgs boson properties. We present a simplified version of the shower deconstruction approach as a novel observable for quark-gluon tagging. Assuming topoclusterlike objects as input, we compare our observable with energy correlation functions and find a favorable performance for a large variety of jet definitions. We address the issue of infrared sensitivity of quark-gluon discrimination. Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for top-quark pair production with up to two jets merged with a parton shower

We present differential cross sections for the production of top-quark pairs in conjunction with up to two jets, computed at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD and consistently merged with a parton shower in the SHERPA+OPENLOOPS framework. Top quark decays including spin correlation effects are taken into account at leading order accuracy. The calculation yields a unified description of top-pair plus multi-jet production, and detailed results are presented for various key observables at the Large Hadron Collider. Parton showers and matching uncertainties in top quark pair production with Herwig 7

Abstract We evaluate the theoretical uncertainties in next-to-leading order plus parton shower predictions for top quark pair production and decay in hadronic collisions. Our work is carried out using the Herwig 7 event generator and presents an in-depth study of variations in matching schemes with two systematically different shower algorithms, the traditional angular-ordered and alternative dipole shower. Finding the charge of the top quark in the dilepton channel

There is a question about the identity of the top quark. Is it the top quark of the Standard Model (SM) with electric charge 2/3 or is it an exotic quark with charge -4/3? An exotic quark has been proposed by D. Chang et al. [1]. This analysis will use the standard CDF run II dilepton sample. The key ingredients of this analysis are the correct pairing of the lepton and b-jet, the determination of the charge of the b-jet.
