Measurement of the $2 ν β β$ decay half-life and search for the $0 ν β β$ decay of ${}^{116}{Cd}$ with the NEMO-3 detector

The NEMO-3 experiment measured the half-life of the 2νββ decay and searched for the 0νββ decay of ¹¹⁶Cd. Using 410 g of ¹¹⁶Cd installed in the detector with an exposure of 5.26 y, (4968±74) events corresponding to the 2νββ decay of ¹¹⁶Cd to the ground state of ¹¹⁶Sn have been observed with a signal to background ratio of about 12. The half-life of the 2νββ decay has been measured to be T^2ν_1/2 = [2.74 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.18(syst)] × 10¹⁹ y. Valence neutron properties relevant to the neutrinoless double- $β$ decay of $^{130}$ Te

The valence neutron composition of the Te-130 and Xe-130 ground states has been studied with a view to constraining calculations of the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Te-130. Single-neutron adding and removing reactions on Te-128,Te-130 and Xe-130,Xe-132 have been used to probe the vacancy of the 0g7/2, 1d(5/2), 1d(3/2), 2s(1/2), and 0h(11/2) orbitals. The change in the vacancy of these orbitals, obtained through a self-consistent determination of spectroscopic factors utilizing the Macfarlane-French sum rules, for Te-130 -> Xe-130 is shared only between the d, s(1/2), and h(11/2) orbitals, with the g(7/2) playing no significant role.
