Cross sections for emission of complex fragments ({ital Z}{gt}2) in their ground and excited states are presented for the reaction {sup 58}Ni+{sup 58}Ni at a bombarding energy of 630 MeV. Measurements of energy spectra, angular distributions, and angle-integrated cross sections were made for fragments of {ital Z}=4 to 20. {gamma} rays emitted in coincidence with the fragments were measured in a 4{pi} geometry using 62 NaI detectors and 8 Compton-suppressed germanium detectors. Spectroscopy of neutron-rich Fe isotopes populated in the {sup 64}Ni+{sup 238}U reaction

The neutron-rich Fe isotopes from A=61 to 66 were studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a {sup 238}U target with a 400 MeV {sup 64}Ni beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt {gamma} rays belonging to each nucleus was achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data extend our knowledge of the level structure of Fe isotopes, which is discussed in terms of the systematics of the region and compared with large-scale shell-model calculations.

We have measured the isotopic cross sections of 130 secondary fragmentation isotopes from 10 different beam nuclei from {sup 9}Be to {sup 58}Ni that were accelerated to between 400 and 650 MeV nucleon{sup {minus}1} at the SATURNE Accelerator in France in 1993 and 1994. These beam nuclei interacted in a 1.52 g cm{sup {minus}2} thick liquid hydrogen target, and the isotopic fragments were observed. This is the first use of a pure hydrogen target with a thickness approximating the amount of hydrogen traversed by cosmic rays in our Galaxy to measure cross sections. Isotopically resolved intermediate-mass fragments and light charged particles have been detected from the reactions {sup 40}Ar and {sup 40}Ca with {sup 58}Fe and {sup 58}Ni at E{sub beam}=33 and 45 MeV/nucleon. There is an angular dependence to the isotopic ratios. A moving source analysis shows that fragments emitted at {Theta}{sub lab}=40{degree} can be attributed primarily to a composite source while the fragments emitted at backward angles are primarily from a targetlike source. Resonant valence-band satellites at the Ni-3p edge of Ni{sub 3}Al, Ni{sub 3}Ga and Ni{sub 3}In

Valence-band photoemission spectra of Ni{sub 3}Al, Ni{sub 3}Ga and Ni{sub 3}In were measured with synchrotron radiation at photon energies around the Ni-3p core excitation threshold. The valence-band satellites are resonantly enhanced. The number of holes per Ni atom in the Ni-D band for Ni{sub 3}Al, Ni{sub 3}Ga and Ni{sub 3}In is estimated to be 0.37, 0.30 and 0.34, respectively. The self-energy correction due to the configuration interaction is 0.72, 0.71 and 0.72 eV, respectively, for Ni{sub 3}Al, Ni{sub 3}Ga and Ni{sub 3}In. The Fano parameters and the effective Coulomb interactions between two 3D holes for these intermetallic compounds are determined.
