A high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonator-oscillator-based 4.596 GHz frequency source: Application to a coherent population trapping Cs vapor cell atomic clock

This article reports on the design and characterization of a high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonator (HBAR)-oscillator-based 4.596 GHz frequency source. A 2.298 GHz signal, generated by an oscillator constructed around a thermally controlled two-port aluminum nitride-sapphire HBAR resonator with a Q-factor of 24 000 at 68 °C, is frequency multiplied by 2–4.596 GHz, half of the Cs atom clock frequency. The temperature coefficient of frequency of the HBAR is measured to be −23 ppm/ °C at 2.298 GHz. Construction of the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) is underway for the world’s first hard x-ray free-electron laser. A central part of the LCLS-II project is a 4 GeV superconducting radio frequency electron linac that will operate in the continuous wave (cw) mode. The linac is segmented into four sections named as L0, L1, L2, and L3. Semiconductor integrated etalon interference laser with a curved resonator

A semiconductor interferometric laser with a resonator having curved and straight segments is reported. Interference is caused by internal reflection at the junction discontinuity between curved and straight segments due to a slight difference between the wave propagation constants. Lateral mode stability is provided by the fabrication of a buried heterostructure type laser cavity. The outstanding features of the laser are (1) very stable single longitudinal mode and stable lateral mode operation, and (2) a wavelength locking range of up to 23 /sup 0/C within which the wavelength changes at a rate of 0.5--0.6 A//sup 0/C.

3.4 GHz composite thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator for miniaturized atomic clocks

Triple layer SiO{sub 2}/AlN/SiO{sub 2} composite thin film bulk acoustic wave resonators (TFBARs) were studied for applications in atomic clocks. The TFBAR's were tuned to 3.4 GHz, corresponding to half the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of rubidium {sup 87}Rb atoms. The quality factor (Q) was equal to 2300 and the temperature coefficient of the resonance frequency f{sub r} amounted to 1.5 ppm/K. A figure of merit Qf{sub r} of {approx} 0.8 x 10{sup 13} Hz and a thickness mode coupling factor of 1% were reached. Such figures are ideal for frequency sources in an oscillator circuit that tracksmore » the optical signal in atomic clocks.« less
