Relativistic harmonic oscillator for spin-1/2 particles in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism

A kernel for the spin-1/2 relativistic Bethe-Salpeter equation is proposed and the equation is solved in the nonrelativistic limit for the mass spectrum in the case of vector coupling. Numerical results are also presented for the fully relativistic case. It is found that in addition to the ordinary, evenly spaced energy levels of the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator, the spin coupling produces another family of states with level spacing proportional to n, the principal quantum number. By the use of an inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation a normalization condition for the Bethe-Salpeter wave function is obtained. This condition requires the normalization integral to be positive. A formal solution is obtained in the ladder approximation, and convergence of the normalization integral is proved by the use of this solution. This solution is also used to prove a dispersion relation for tae vertex function of the compound particle, and to give an approximate solution. A popular three-dimensional reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter formalism for the description of bound states in quantum field theory is the Salpeter equation, derived by assuming both instantaneous interactions and free propagation of all bound-state constituents. Numerical (variational) studies of the Salpeter equation with confining interaction, however, observed specific instabilities of the solutions, likely related to the Klein paradox and rendering (part of the) bound states unstable. Deep inelastic scattering on the deuteron in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism: Scalar meson exchange

The deep inelastic scattering on the deuteron is considered in a fully covariant field theoretical approach. All calculations are performed in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism and the Wilson operator product expansion method within an effective meson-nucleon theory. By the operator product expansion method we obtain an explicit form of the nucleon contribution and mesonic exchange corrections to moments of the deuteron structure function [ital F][sub 2][sup [ital D]].
