Stress drop, while difficult to measure reliably and at scale, is a key source parameter for understanding the earthquake rupture process and its relationship to strong ground motion. Dynamic stress wave reflections/attenuation: earthquake simulation in centrifuge soil models

In this investigation, the feasibility of earthquake simulation in centrifuge soil experiments is studied. The strong detrimental effect of standing waves for such an endeavour is clearly shown. A modest degree of success toward producing a model earthquake is reported via two devices--a certain kind of physically tuned internal excito and an effective absorbent material at the walls.

Seismicity related to a given fault area is governed by the distribution of the difference between shear stress and frictional stress over the fault surface. Extent of rupture in any given earthquake depends on the size of the area around the nucleation point for which a dynamic rupture criterion is satisfied.
