Direct imaging of rotational wave-packet dynamics of diatomic molecules

We use linearly polarized 45 fs pulses to create rotational wave packets in N{sub 2} and O{sub 2}. We Coulomb explode molecules with a high-intensity circularly polarized pulse and use an ion imaging detector to measure a series of two-dimensional projections of the wave packet's angular distribution in 27 fs increments. We highlight the evolving wave packet near the first, second, sixth, and tenth full revival times and also near the one-eighth, one-quarter, one-half, and three-quarter fractional revivals.

Control of rotational wave-packet dynamics in asymmetric top molecules

We combine newly developed experimental and theoretical methods to explore and control the rotations of asymmetric top molecules. In the low-temperature limit, the revival spectra of laser-driven rotational wave packets exhibit a fascinating quantum-mechanical structure, which is qualitatively different for asymmetric tops compared to symmetric or linear tops. With increasing fluence, the structure gradually simplifies, illustrating a controllable transformation of the rotational dynamics. Our theoretical and experimental predictions are in qualitative agreement.

Nonspreading Wave Packets for Rydberg Electrons in Rotating Molecules with Electric Dipole Moments

Nonspreading wave packets for Rydberg electrons are predicted in rotating molecules with electric dipole moments. We have named them the Trojan wave packets since their stability is due to the same mechanism that governs the motion of the Trojan asteroids in the Sun-Jupiter system. Unlike all previously predicted Trojan wave packets in atoms, molecular Trojan states do not require external fields for their existence.
