Emphanisis, or the appearance out of nothing, has been used to describe the phenomena of spontaneous atom off-centering and dipole formation at elevated temperatures in lead chalcogenides. Here, we provide spectroscopic evidence of spontaneous formation of metal-metal bonds above T∼50 K in the layered metal KNi2Se2. These bonds form zig-zag chains that lower the local symmetry from tetragonal to monoclinic. Energy-resolved pair distribution function measurements exclude a pure phonon origin of our observations, and instead imply the existence of extra, slowly fluctuating, Ni−Ni bonds above T=50 K. Density functional theory calculations support this lower symmetry configuration as an instability of tetragonal KNi2Se2.more »« less

Comparative Study on the Charge-Ordered and Mixed-Valence Phases of LuFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} via First-Principles Calculations

The first-principles density functional theory calculations have been used to investigate the relation between magnetic and structural properties of LuFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} for both the charge-ordered (CO) and the mixed-valence (MV) phases and also to compare the electronic properties for both phases. The computed structural parameters of rhombohedral and monoclinic systems are found to be in good agreement with experimental findings. An analysis of the magnetic properties is provided considering nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and ferrimagnetic model orderings. EuBaFe{sub 2}O{sub 5+w}: Valence mixing and charge ordering are two separate cooperative phenomena

Mixed-valence EuBaFe{sub 2}O{sub 5+w} exhibits a robust Verwey-type transition. The trend in the volume change suggests a first-order transition up to the nonstoichiometry level of about w=0.25. {sup 57}Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction are used to study the valence mixing and charge ordering in EuBaFe{sub 2}O{sub 5+w} as a function of the nonstoichiometry parameter w. {sup 151}Eu Mossbauer spectroscopy is used as a selective probe into the ferromagnetic valence-mixing coupling along c above the Verwey transition, and reveals that increasing w destroys this coupling in favor of a G-type magnetic order in parallel withmore »« less

Metal–organic frameworks are of interest for use in a variety of electrochemical and electronic applications, although a detailed understanding of their charge transport behavior, which is of critical importance for enhancing electronic conductivities, remains limited. Herein, we report isolation of the mixed-valence framework materials, Fe(tri)₂(BF₄)_x (tri^–= 1,2,3-triazolate; x = 0.09, 0.22, and 0.33), obtained from the stoichiometric chemical oxidation of the poorly-conductive iron(II) framework Fe(tri)₂, and find that the conductivity increases dramatically with iron oxidation level.
