A nano-scale metallic grain (nanoparticle) with irregular boundaries in which the single-particle dynamics are chaotic is a zero-dimensional system described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian in the limit of a large number of electrons. The interaction part of this Hamiltonian includes a superconducting pairing term and a ferromagnetic exchange term. Spin-orbit scattering breaks spin symmetry and suppresses the exchange interaction term. Thermodynamic and spectral properties of ultrasmall superconducting grains

The authors study the problem of superconductivity in the canonical ensemble which applies to recent experiments on metallic nanoparticles. Spectral properties which can be expressed as universal functions allow a quantitative characterization of the crossover to superconductivity in finite metallic systems. Parity effects in the ground state and excitation spectrum are discussed. The authors discuss the thermodynamic quantities as well. The susceptibility for odd grains shows a reentrant behavior with temperature. This behavior may be an observable signature of superconducting correlations in ultrasmall grains.

Detection of luminescent single ultrasmall silicon nanoparticles using fluctuation correlation spectroscopy

We dispersed electrochemical etched Si into a colloid of ultrasmall blue luminescent nanoparticles, observable with the naked eye, in room light. We use two-photon near-infrared femtosecond excitation at 780 nm to record the fluctuating time series of the luminescence, and determine the number density, brightness, and size of diffusing fluorescent particles. The luminescence efficiency of particles is high enough such that we are able to detect a single particle, in a focal volume, of 1 pcm3. Smoothed dissipative particle dynamics model for mesoscopic multiphase flows in the presence of thermal fluctuations

Thermal fluctuations cause perturbations of fluid-fluid interfaces and highly nonlinear hydrodynamics in multiphase flows. In this work, we develop a novel multiphase smoothed dissipative particle dynamics model. This model accounts for both bulk hydrodynamics and interfacial fluctuations. Interfacial surface tension is modeled by imposing a pairwise force between SDPD particles. We show that the relationship between the model parameters and surface tension, previously derived under the assumption of zero thermal fluctuation, is accurate for fluid systems at low temperature but overestimates the surface tension for intermediate and large thermal fluctuations.
