Light Fermionic Dark Matter and its Possible Detection in Neutrino Experiments

We explore the potential for the direct detection of light fermionic dark matter in neutrino detectors. We consider the possible observation of the process fp->e{sup +}n, where f is a dark matter fermion, in a model-independent manner. All operators of dimension six or lower which can contribute to this process are listed, and we place constraints on these operators from decays of f which contain gamma rays or electrons. One operator is found which is sufficiently weakly constrained that it could give observable interactions in neutrino detectors. We find that Super-Kamiokande can probe the new physics scale for this operatormore » up to O(100 TeV).« less

Spin-dependent interpretation for possible signals of light dark matter

Signals broadly compatible with light (7-10 GeV) dark matter have been reported in three direct detection experiments: CoGeNT, DAMA/LIBRA, and CDMS-II silicon. These possible signals have been interpreted in the context of spin-independent interactions between the target nuclei and dark matter, although there is tension with null results, particularly from xenon-based experiments. In this paper, we demonstrate that the CoGeNT and CDMS-II silicon results are also compatible assuming a spin-dependent neutron interaction, though this is in tension with xenon-based experiments and PICASSO. The matter power spectrum at comoving scales of (1-40)h{sup -1} Mpc is very sensitive to the presence of Warm Dark Matter (WDM) particles with large free-streaming lengths. We present constraints on the mass of WDM particles from a combined analysis of the matter power spectrum inferred from the large samples of high-resolution high signal-to-noise Lyman-{alpha} forest data of Kim et al. (2004) and Croft et al. (2002) and the cosmic microwave background data of WMAP. Shedding light on dark matter: A Faraday rotation experiment to limit a dark magnetic moment

A Faraday rotation experiment can set limits on the magnetic moment of a electrically-neutral, dark-matter particle, and the limits increase in stringency as the candidate-particle mass decreases. Consequently, if we assume the dark-matter particle to be a thermal relic, our most stringent constraints emerge at the keV mass scale. We discuss how such an experiment could be realized and determine the limits on the magnetic moment as a function of mass which follow given demonstrated experimental capacities.
