We analyze the vacuum structure of SU(2) QCD with multiple massless adjoint representation fermions formulated on a small spatial S{sup 1}xR{sup 3}. The absence of thermal fluctuations, and the fact that quantum fluctuations favor the vacuum with unbroken center symmetry in a weakly coupled regime, renders the interesting dynamics of these theories analytically calculable. Confinement and the generation of the mass gap in the gluonic sector are shown analytically. In this regime, theory exhibits confinement without continuous chiral-symmetry breaking. Chiral symmetry breaking without bilinear condensates, unbroken axial Z{sub N} symmetry, and exact QCD inequalities

An alternative pattern of chiral symmetry breaking, suggested recently, is investigated. It could be self-consistent provided that the chiral SU(N{sub f}){times}SU(N{sub f}) symmetry is broken spontaneously down to SU(N{sub f}){times}Z{sub N{sub f}} rather than to SU(N{sub f}){sub V}. The discrete axial Z{sub N{sub f}} then would play a custodial role, preventing the quark bilinears from condensation. It is shown that this pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is ruled out in QCD by exact inequalities. Mirror Symmetry Breaking and Restoration: The Role of Noise and Chiral Bias

The nonequilibrium effective potential is computed for the Frank model of spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) in chemistry in which external noise is introduced to account for random environmental effects. When these fluctuations exceed a critical magnitude, mirror symmetry is restored. The competition between ambient noise and the chiral bias due to physical fields and polarized radiation can be explored with this potential.

Separating the scales of confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking in lattice QCD with fundamental quarks

Suggested holographic duals of QCD, based on AdS/CFT duality, predict that one should be able to vary the scales of color confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking independently. Furthermore they suggest that such independent variation of scales can be achieved by the inclusion of extra 4-fermion interactions in QCD. We simulate lattice QCD with such extra 4-fermion terms at finite temperatures and show that for strong enough 4-fermion couplings the deconfinement transition occurs at a lower temperature than the chiral-symmetry restoration transition. Chiral-symmetry breaking and the QCD string

The Lorentz nature of the effective interquark interaction is investigated in a heavy-light quarkonium. The approach of the Dyson-Schwinger-type equation and the quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian method of the QCD string with quarks at the ends are employed to demonstrate that the effective scalar interaction, which appears owing to chiral-symmetry breaking, is responsible for the QCD-string formation. The Hamiltonian of the QCD string with quarks at the ends arises naturally if this effective scalar interaction dominates. If, on the contrary, chiral symmetry is manifest, the effective interquark interaction remains vectorial, and the corresponding bound-state equation is incompatible with the QCD-string Hamiltonian.We concludemore »« less
