The growth and stability of the Pb8 x 8 wetting layer on Si(111)7 x 7, which provides a foundation for growing quantum-size-effect nanocrystals, was investigated by in situ x-ray scattering. Our experimental results reveal that the wetting-layer structure evolves temporally over a remarkably broad range of temperatures and that there are two distinct temperature regimes of nonequilibrium behavior. When grown at lower temperature (below 170 C), it was discovered that the wetting-layer structure changes with time, indicating that its disordered structure is not static; annealing in this regime improves the order of the wetting layer. $C_{60}$ -induced Devil's Staircase transformation on a Pb/Si(111) wetting layer

Density functional theory is used to study structural energetics of Pb vacancy cluster formation on C₆₀/Pb/Si(111) to explain the unusually fast and error-free transformations between the “Devil's Staircase” (DS) phases on the Pb/Si(111) wetting layer at low temperature (~110K). The formation energies of vacancy clusters are calculated in C₆₀/Pb/Si(111) as Pb atoms are progressively ejected from the initial dense Pb wetting layer. Vacancy clusters larger than five Pb atoms are found to be stable with seven being the most stable, while vacancy clusters smaller than five are highly unstable, which agrees well with the observed ejection rate of ~5 Pbmore »« less

Surface x-ray-diffraction study and quantum well analysis of the growth and atomic-layer structure of ultrathin Pb/Si(111) films

We present surface x-ray-diffraction results from Pb films grown on pretreated Si(111) substrates at 110 K. Time-resolved data show that the films follow a metastable layer-by-layer growth mode. The resulting film roughness is small, allowing for a thickness-dependent study of the film layer structure and its distortion (strain) relative to the bulk. The strain arises as a result of quantum confinement of the electrons in the film, which leads to charge distortions similar to Friedel oscillations.
