In-Beam $γ$ -Ray Spectroscopy of ${}^{34, 36, 38}{Mg}$ : Merging the $N = 20$ and $N = 28$ Shell Quenching

Neutron-rich N = 22, 24, 26 magnesium isotopes were studied in this paper via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory following secondary fragmentation reactions on a carbon target at ≈ 200 MeV /nucleon. In the one- and two-proton removal channels from ³⁹Al and ⁴⁰Si beams, two distinct γ-ray transitions were observed in ³⁸Mg, while in the one-proton removal reaction from ³⁷Al a new transition was observed in addition to the known 2⁺₁ → 0 ⁺_g.s. decay. Evidence for the dipole nature of the low-energy $γ$ enhancement in ${}^{56}{Fe}$

Here, the γ-ray strength function of ⁵⁶Fe has been measured from proton-γ coincidences for excitation energies up to ≈11 MeV. The low-energy enhancement in the γ-ray strength function, which was first discovered in the (³He,αγ)⁵⁶Fe reaction, is confirmed with the (p,p'γ)⁵⁶Fe experiment reported here. Angular distributions of the γ rays give for the first time evidence that the enhancement is dominated by dipole transitions.

Key ${}^{19}{Ne}$ States Identified Affecting $γ$ -Ray Emission from ${}^{18}F$ in Novae

Detection of nuclear-decay γ rays provides a sensitive thermometer of nova nucleosynthesis. The most intense γ-ray flux is thought to be annihilation radiation from the β⁺ decay of ¹⁸F, which is destroyed prior to decay by the ¹⁸F(p,α)¹⁵O reaction. Estimates of ¹⁸F production had been uncertain, however, because key near-threshold levels in the compound nucleus, ¹⁹Ne, had yet to be identified. We report the first measurement of the ¹⁹F(³He,tγ)¹⁹Ne reaction, in which the placement of two long-sought 3/2⁺ levels is suggested via triton-γ–γ coincidences.
