We have found that the geometrically frustrated spin chain compound Ca{sub 3}Co{sub 2}O{sub 6} belonging to Ising like universality class with uniaxial anisotropy shows kinetic arrest of first order intermediate phase (IP) to ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition. In this system, dc magnetization measurements followed by different protocols suggest the coexistence of high temperature IP with equilibrium FIM phase in low temperature. Formation of metastable state due to hindered first order transition has also been probed through cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) protocol. The evolution of the ground state of the manganese spin ensemble in the (Sm{sub 1–y}Gd{sub y}){sub 0.55}Sr{sub 0.45}MnO{sub 3} in the case of isovalent substitution of rare-earth samarium ions with large radii with gadolinium ions with significantly smaller radii is studied. The measured temperature dependences of the ac magnetic susceptibility and the field dependences of the dc magnetizations are analyzed using the Heisenberg–Kitaev model describing the transition from the ordered spin state with classical isotropic AFM exchange to the frustrated spin state with quantum highly anisotropic FM exchange. Theory of the Field-Induced BEC in the Frustrated Spin-(1/2) Dimer Compound BaCuSi{sub 2}O{sub 6}

Building on recent neutron and NMR experiments, we investigate the field-induced exotic criticality observed in the frustrated compound BaCuSi{sub 2}O{sub 6} using a frustrated model with two types of bilayers. A semiclassical treatment of the effective hard-core boson model shows that perfect interlayer frustration leads to a 2D-like critical exponent {phi}=1 without logarithmic corrections and to a 3D low temperature phase with different but nonvanishing triplet populations in both types of bilayers. These further suggest a simple phenomenology in terms of a field-dependent transverse coupling in the context of which we reproduce the entire field-temperature phase diagram with quantum Montemore » Carlo simulations.« less

Phase transition, thermal expansion and electrical properties of BiCu{sub 2}VO{sub 6}

Phase transition in BiCu{sub 2}VO{sub 6} has been studied by variable temperature powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. A reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transition has been identified and the high-temperature {beta}-BiCu{sub 2}VO{sub 6} polymorph structurally characterized. {beta}-BiCu{sub 2}VO{sub 6} is monoclinic I-centered and related to the {alpha}-form by a subgroup-supergroup relationship. Bi atoms are coordinated to oxygen so as to give rise to (BiO{sub 2}){sup -} chains parallel to the c-axis. The magnetic Cu-O sublattice forms a complex system of quasi one-dimensional ladders, built up by five- and six-coordinate Cu atoms. Giant suppression of phononic heat transport in a quantum magnet BiCu₂PO₆

Thermal transport of quantum magnets has elucidated the nature of low energy elementary excitations and complex interplay between those excited states via strong scattering of thermal carriers. BiCu₂PO₆ is a unique frustrated spin-ladder compound exhibiting highly anisotropic spin excitations that contain both itinerant and localized dispersion characters along the b- and a-axes respectively. Here, we investigate thermal conductivity κ of BiCu₂PO₆ under high magnetic fields (H) of up to 30 tesla.
