Multiferroic oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components hold the promise for nonvolatile magnetic control via ferroelectric polarization, advantageous for the low-dissipation spintronics. Modern understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in these systems involves structural, orbital, and magnetic reconstructions at interfaces. Previous works have long proposed polarization-dependent interfacial magnetic structures; however, direct evidence is still missing, which requires advanced characterization tools with near-atomic-scale spatial resolutions. Here, extensive polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) studies have determined the magnetic depth profiles of PbZr_0.2Ti_0.8O₃/La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO₃ (PZT/LSMO) bilayers with opposite self-polarizations. Evolution of strain-dependent transport properties in ultrathin La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO{sub 3} films

We report on a systematic investigation of strain-induced lattice distortion effects on the crystal structure and transport properties of as-grown and postannealed ultrathin La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO{sub 3} epitaxial films grown on LaAlO{sub 3} (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The resistivity of the as-grown films is critically dependent on the thickness, i.e., 100 {Angstrom} thick films show insulating behavior, 300 {Angstrom} thick films show metal-insulator transitions, and 500 {Angstrom} thick films show metallic behavior. However, all the annealed films show identical metallic behavior. Magnetic properties and interfacial phenomena of epitaxial perovskite oxides depend sensitively on parameters such as film thickness and strain state. In this work, epitaxial La0_.67Sr_0.33CoO₃(LSCO)/La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO₃ (LSMO) bilayers were grown on NdGaO₃ (NGO) and LaAlO₃ (LAO) substrates with a fixed LSMO thickness of 6 nm, and LSCO thickness (t_LSCO) varying from 2 to 10 nm. Soft x-ray magnetic spectroscopy revealed that magnetically active Co²⁺ions that strongly coupled to the LSMO layer were observed below a critical t_LSCO for bilayers grown on both substrates. Two elaborately designed hybrids consisting of superconducting YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO{sub 3} (LSMO), namely 20 × (YBCO(m)/LSMO(100 − m)) are prepared on single crystal SrTiO{sub 3} (STO) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with 20 being repetition periods and m = 90 and 10, respectively, which represents YBCO pulse number in a period. Searching for multifunctional materials with tunable magnetic and optical properties has been a critical task toward the implementation of future integrated optical devices. Vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films provide a unique platform for multifunctional material designs. In this work, a new metal–oxide VAN has been designed with plasmonic Au nanopillars embedded in a ferromagnetic La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO₃ (LSMO) matrix.
