High-spin states of {sup 191,193}Au and {sup 192}Pt have been populated in the {sup 186}W({sup 11}B, xn) and {sup 186}W({sup 11}B, p4n) reactions, respectively, at a beam energy of 68 MeV and their {gamma} decay was studied using the YRAST Ball detector array at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. The level scheme of {sup 193}Au has been extended up to I{sup {pi}}=55/2{sup +}. New transitions were observed also in {sup 191}Au and {sup 192}Pt. Nuclear shape deformations in 485-MeV /sup 56/Fe+/sup 197/Au reactions

Detailed coincidence studies of light-charged-particle evaporation in 485-MeV /sup 56/Fe+ /sup 197/Au reactions have recently been used to probe the features of fusion-like fission and deeply inelastic reaction mechanisms. We summarize here the average statistical properties which characterize the several identified groups of hot nuclear emitters. These properties are derived from comparisons of observed /sup 4/He//sup 1/H energy spectra and angular distributions with model calculations. The results demonstrate remarkably low effective evaporation barriers for the very heavy composite system produced here, consistent with the trends found previously for much lighter systems.

Deformation of rotational structures in {sup 73}Kr and {sup 74}Rb: Probing the additivity principle at triaxial shapes

Lifetimes have been deduced in the intermediate/high-spin range for the three known rotational bands in {sup 73}Kr and the T=0 band in {sup 74}Rb using the residual Doppler shift method. This has enabled relative transition quadrupole moments to be studied for the first time in triaxial nuclei as a function of spin. The data suggest that the additivity principle for transition quadrupole moments is violated, a result that is in disagreement with predictions from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked relativistic mean-field theory calculations. New shape minimum in {sup 160}Yb: Evidence for a triaxial, strongly deformed band

A high-spin rotational band was observed in the N=90 nucleus {sup 160}Yb with moment of inertia and decay characteristics very similar to recently discovered sequences in {sup 157,158}Er. These latter structures were discussed in terms of strongly deformed triaxial bands. Detailed cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations were performed that predict that well-deformed triaxial structures are also expected at high spin in {sup 160}Yb. Within this interpretation the observed discontinuity in the dynamic moment of inertia around ({Dirac_h}/2{pi}){omega}=0.40-0.45 MeV can be explained as a crossing between i{sub 13/2} neutron levels.
