Size effects on the thermal conductivity of amorphous silicon thin films

In this study, we investigate thickness-limited size effects on the thermal conductivity of amorphous silicon thin films ranging from 3 to 1636 nm grown via sputter deposition. While exhibiting a constant value up to ~100 nm, the thermal conductivity increases with film thickness thereafter. The thickness dependence we demonstrate is ascribed to boundary scattering of long wavelength vibrations and an interplay between the energy transfer associated with propagating modes (propagons) and nonpropagating modes (diffusons). A crossover from propagon to diffuson modes is deduced to occur at a frequency of ~1.8 THz via simple analytical arguments. These results provide empirical evidencemore »« less

Microsegregation effects on the thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium alloys

A silicon-germanium (SiGe) alloy is a promising candidate for thermoelectric materials; while it shows a significantly reduced thermal conductivity (κ) as compared to pure Si and Ge, the κ values obtained from previous experiments and computations tend to be widely scattered. We present here a computational analysis of thermal transport in SiGe, particularly the effects of the local segregation (microsegregation) of alloying elements. Our nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations confirm the strong dependence of κ on the Si:Ge ratio and the occurrence of the minimum κ around Si{sub 0.8}Ge{sub 0.2}, consistent with existing experimental observations. Size and interface effects on thermal conductivity of superlattices and periodic thin-film structures

Superlattices consisting of alternating layers of extremely thin films often demonstrate strong quantum size effects, which have been utilized to improve conventional devices and develop new ones. The interfaces in these structures also affect their thermophysical properties through reflection and transmission of heat carriers. This work develops models on the effective thermal conductivity of periodic thin-film structures in the parallel direction based on the Boltzmann transport equation. Different interface conditions including specular, diffuse, and partially specular and partially diffuse interfaces, are considered. Predictions obtained from the diffuse interface scattering model are in reasonable agreement with experimental results on GaAs/AlAs superlattices.more »« less
