The isomer yield ratio of Cd/sup 15m/(11/2-)to Cd/sup 115/ (1/2+) has been investigated for the reactions U/sup 238/(d,f), Sn/sup 118/ (d, alpha p) and (n, alpha ), In/sup 115/(d,2p) and (n,p), and Cd/sup 114/(d,p) from 10 to 25 Mev. The results are discussed in terms of several spin important mechanisms. The minimum in the isomer yield ratio vs. energy for U/sup 238/(d,f) is consistent with a proposal involving increased fission barrier penetration for high-spin compound nuclei in symmetric fission at low excitation energies. Excited states built on the 6[sup [minus]] isomer in [sub 37][sup 86]Rb[sub 49]

High-spin states of the doubly-odd nucleus[sup 86]Rb containing 37 protons and 49 neutrons have been investigated via the reaction [sup 82]Se([sup 7]Li,3[ital n]) using [sup 7]Li ions with energies between 30 and 35 MeV. The new level scheme is based on prompt [gamma][gamma] coincidences, angular distributions and directional correlation orientation ratios of [gamma] rays as well as on linear polarizations of some strong [gamma] rays and contains levels with excitation energies up to 7.9 MeV and tentative spins up to 16[h bar]. Giant dipole resonance built on highly excited states of {sup 120}Sn nuclei populated by inelastic {alpha} scattering

High energy {gamma} rays from the decay of the giant resonance in hot {sup 120}Sn nuclei were measured in the excitation energy range of 30{endash}130 MeV. The excited nuclei were populated by inelastic scattering of {alpha} particles at 40 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The resonance width was observed to increase monotonically with increasing excitation energy, from 5 MeV at the ground state to {approximately}12 MeV at the largest excitation energy. Inelastic scattering predominantly populates low angular momentum states, and the observed width increase is thus attributed to fluctuations in the nuclear shape induced by temperature. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physicalmore » Society.}« less

Gamma decay of isovector giant resonances built on highly excited states in /sup 111/Sn

Gamma-ray transition-energy spectra up to E/sub ..gamma../approx. =33 MeV have been measured for the decay of the compound nucleus /sup 111/Sn( populated at excitation energies up to E(approx. =100 MeV. Above E/sub ..gamma../approx. =20 MeV an excess of gamma rays over the contribution from the isovector giant dipole resonance is observed in the energy range where the isovector giant quadrupole resonance built on excited states is expected. The width of the giant dipole resonance in /sup 108,111/Sn( shows a large increase with increasing nuclear temperature and angular momentum.

THE ISOMER IN $sup 119$Sn AND THE QUADRUPOLE MOMENT OF THE FIRST EXCITED STATE

Using the Mossbauer effect, the nuclear quadrupole splitting of the first excited state of Sn/sup 119/ was measured in tin compounds, and a comparison was made of isomer shifts of the ground state transition. The isomer shlft is interpreted in terms of a change in the mean square deformation of the nucleus ( beta /sup 2/) arising mainly from the zero-point vibrational motion. The difference in ( beta /sup 2/) between the excited and ground states is +6 x 10/sup -4/.
